Families Prosper with Shell
Date: 11 February 2017

No Lunar New Year is complete without festive décor. With a lantern-making competition, 11 volunteers from Shell Jurong Island celebrated the New Year with 10 families from Lakeside’s Families-in-Transition Shelter. Shell also sponsored breakfast, goodie bags filled with daily necessities, and a $100 angpao (red packet) for each family. Thank you Shell for bringing good fortune and joy to our families!

Lights, Camera, Active Seniors!
Date: 6 December 2016

Some of Lakeside’s seniors have not been to Orchard in a decade. 18 Shell Jurong Island volunteers brought 15 seniors* to enjoy the Christmas lights at Orchard Road and Gardens by the Bay. The elderly revellers spent the evening posing for the camera, while the friendly volunteers snapped away. Reflecting on their companionship, 82-year-old Mr Tiu Eng Tai enthused, “I feel 20 years younger!”

Out of the Country with Mon & Dad
Date: 23 October 2016

Children’s Day took a rustic turn when Shell Singapore took 25 parents and 36 children from Lakeside Student Care to Kranji Countryside. The children indulged in their parents’ childhood pastime of long kang (canal) fishing. It was part of an eye-opening day exploring the mushroom farm, ornamental fish farm and goat farm, where they each received a bottle of fresh goat’s milk. What a way to share childhood memories!

United We Score
Date: 22 October 2016

GOAL! The usually quiet stadium at ITE College West was filled with roars of cheers on the afternoon of 22 October. 16 teams comprising of Shell Singapore staff and beneficiaries came together for a friendly soccer tournament. Lakeside is proud to send two teams from our Families-in-Transition (FiT) youths, Agape Inspires volunteers and Lakeside staff.

“Soccer is a powerful interactive game where youths of different backgrounds bond together for a common goal. The sportsmanship acquired will prepare the boys in managing the ups and downs in life,” said Mark Vera, Social Work Associate, FiT Soccer coach.

It was definitely a bonus to score third place in the tournament!

Turning Fightfighters for a Day!
Date: 12 March 2016

Some 30 LFS families and SJI volunteers got a taste of how it felt like to be a firefighter when they paid a visit to the Alexandra Fire Station on 12 March 2016. There, they attended basic first aid and household fire training courses, and even shadowed firefighters on the job! Participants learnt how to operate the firefighting hose and extinguisher, much to their enjoyment.

SJI Technologist Wang Yifan said, “This is an enriching activity and I hope the participants learnt a thing or two from the visit because these takeaways could be applied to reallife situations.”

Jointly organised with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), this experimental learning created an increased awareness of fire safety in school, at work and our home.

A Swimmingly Good Time!
Date: 05 Dec 2015

In December last year, we saw some 12 volunteers from Shell Jurong Island (SJI) accompanying elderly residents from Lakeside Family Services (LFS) to the SEA Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa.

Taking a leisurely walk through the Aquarium, the elderly residents marvelled at the ocean creatures swimming gracefully around them. The seniors and volunteers also had the opportunity to interact and share stories of their own, making the event even more enriching.

First time volunteer and Senior Technologist Jagdish Rao shared, “I enjoyed spending part of the weekend with the LFS elders. What struck me most was the enthusiasm and energy of the senior citizens to see all the attractions on offer. The whole experience was truly energising.”

Natural Learners
Date: 05 December 2016

How much do we know about local plants? At Botanic Gardens, 25 underprivileged Lakeside Student Care (LSC) children got to see, touch and smell them, while hearing from an expert and acing his quizzes. The guided tour was sponsored by Shell Lube Supply Chain, whose 13 volunteers accompanied the children. Appreciating their natural curiosity, LSC teacher Ms Phoebe Leong said, “All kids deserve the same learning opportunities.”
